Two Major Data Breaches Getting Attention
A few days ago the American Red Cross reported that 1 million blood
donors in the Missouri-Illinois Blood Services Region may have had their
personal information stolen earlier this year and it might have been
used in identity thefts.
This announcement came on the heels of the US Veterans Administration
announcing that virtually every veteran in the country had been put
at risk when a laptop containing their personal information was stolen.
Both events are getting attention in Washington and continue to keep
data protection legislation on the front burner.
While most DC insiders predict that nothing will happen on the national
data protection front until next year, opposition to these bills has
decided that one national law is better than 50 state laws. With this
change in the opposition’s position, and with data breaches continuing
to fill the headlines, all agree that it is not if, but when.
